Price, volume and mix
Describes Fynease as of September 2026
Analysis, Revenue & Margin, Revenue has a Price · Volume · Mix panel. It explains why revenue, or cost of sales, moved against the same window a year earlier.
What it splits the change into
- Currency: the effect of exchange rates, taken out first on the prior year's base.
- Volume: the change in total quantity, valued at the prior year's average price.
- Mix: the shift between items that sell at different prices.
- Price (called rate for cost of sales): what remains, including the interaction of price and volume.
- New and discontinued: an item sold in only one of the two years counts here at its full value, not as mix.
The five add up exactly to the change. Each is shown by item, with a table by customer beside it. A materiality setting (all rows, 1% or 5%) folds small rows into All others, and the totals still tie.
What it needs
Sales lines with a quantity and a price, from the Item Sales sync for a QuickBooks Online company, or a customer sales file or a general ledger file with quantity and price columns. With no quantities the panel says so instead of guessing.
How complete it is
- A coverage line shows how much of the income statement revenue the item lines account for, and warns when the two years' coverage differs by more than 15 points.
- Journal entries, lines without an item, credit notes and discounts are not item sales, so the total can differ from the income statement; the coverage line shows by how much.
- Items sold in different units make volume and mix less meaningful.
Where else it appears
The Margin, Movers view reconciles the change in revenue to price, volume and mix plus what is not item-based, and says when item coverage is too low for it to mean anything. Report packages carry a Price · Volume · Mix bridge.
What it does not do
- Compare with the budget: the comparison is the prior year.
- Run under a segment filter: item lines carry no segment.
